Cyclone Relief: Together, We Have the Ability to Help

June 16, 2008

Your generosity has been overwhelming. We’ve raised slightly over $90,000 as of today. A portion of these funds has already gone to repairing our damaged facilities, and to immediate relief. We have distributed thousands of filters so far to people in desperate need of fresh drinking water in the hard-hit delta region.

With the remaining funds we are planning an ambitious next step: to build, staff and supply four entire new filter production plants within the year. This is a long-term commitment that will greatly benefit thousands of people, providing drinking water in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way that also provides dignified jobs for the local population.

The need remains great and your continued funding of this project is sincerely appreciated. On behalf of the people of Myanmar, thank you so much.

Our Foundation is poised to help the victims of Cyclone Nargis like few other organizations in the entire country. We’re on the ground, ready to go, with our established "Clean Water Initiative" that has been operating in Yangon for several years. With your help clean water can be provided to the Burmese people for the weeks and years to come:

• Locals are in critical need of fresh drinking water, yet a bottle now costs 15 times what it did a week ago, due to intense demand.
• We run a water filter production facility just outside Yangon, where clay is fired to make simple yet effective filters that can provide clean water indefinitely, unlike bottled water.
• We are among the very few authorized, licensed and legitimate operations of its kind, in a country that normally spurns foreign NGOs.
• Our filter production plant sustained damage, but the kilns are operating, with locals ready to produce more filters.
• We have three American volunteers in Yangon overseeing an immediate ramping up of filter production operations.
• We currently have a stock of approximately 2,000 filters, but there is a need for more, and additional funds are necessary to distribute them where they are so desperately needed.
• With extremely limited access to fresh water our friends in Yangon are fearful of a cholera outbreak.

As those fortunate enough to be able to travel we are in a unique position to relieve the worst effects of this natural disaster through the simple gift of clean water. Please give generously to those who so desperately need your help.
