Silk Road Travel: Day 14-18
Day 14 Samarkand/Tashkent, Uzbekistan
Today we’ll visit the Bibi Khanum Mosque, once the biggest in Central Asia, which was erected by Tamerlane after his victorious Indian campaign in 1399. Next, explore the Ulughbeg Observatory, named for one of the world’s greatest astronomers. In the 1420s, Ulughbeg, Tamerlane’s grandson, created a 30-meter long astrolabe to chart the stars. Discover the remains of this instrument and a fascinating museum dedicated to his work. This afternoon we’ll drive to Tashkent. Overnight Hotel Intercontinental
Day 15 Tashkent/Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
This morning we fly from Tashkent to Bishkek. Today explore several museums to gain insight into Kyrgyz history and culture. The National Historical Museum’s collection will elucidate the Kyrgyz people, the area’s complex history and Soviet influence. Next, see the Museum of Fine Arts’ compelling displays of folk and applied arts. There will be an opportunity to stroll around central Bishkek and wander the bazaar during day 15 of your Central Asia tour. Overnight Hyatt Regency Bishkek
Day 16 Bishkek/Lake Issyk-Kol, Kyrgyzstan
Today we drive to Lake Issyk-Kol. At over 100 miles long this is the second largest high alpine lake in the world. Issyk-Kol means “warm lake”—a combination of mild salinity, thermal activity and extreme depth keeps the lake from freezing. All the great rulers of Central Asia and many of the most famous travelers through the centuries have stopped by its shore. While exploring this area we hope to encounter nomadic Kyrgyz peoples and visit them in their yurts, the traditional collapsible tents of these nomads. The interior walls of most yurts are decorated with shyrdak, felt carpet. Felt is composed of pressed fibers, and predates both weaving and knitting; archaeological evidence demonstrates that felt has existed since at least 6,500 B.C. Overnight Royal Beach Resort, Lake Issyk-Kol
Day 17 Ala Archa NP/Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Today we drive back towards Bishkek and en route we visit the remains of the ancient city of Balasagun and the 11th century ruins of the Baruna Tower. We explore the mountains outside of Bishkek for a visit to the Ala Archa National Park. The Park was established in 1976 to protect its great natural diversity: the cliffs, woodlands and meadows support over 170 animal species and more than 800 plant species. Enjoy a stroll in this beautiful alpine nature preserve. Return to Bishkek for our farewell dinner to end this amazing Silk Road travel. Overnight Hyatt Regency Bishkek
Day 18 Home or Extend
Early this morning we depart Central Asia for home, via Istanbul (suggested flight only), or begin an extension to other incredible locales in Asia.
