China Travel Guide: Special Activities

Four Holy Mountains
Considered holy sites by Taoists and Buddhists and used for imperial ancestral sacrifices, these four holy mountains of Tai Shan, Huang Shan, Qingcheng Shan, and Emei Shan combine stunning natural scenery with religious and political history. Follow in imperial footsteps at Tai Shan in Shandong, climb through the “cloud seas” of Huang Shan in Anhui, linger at the many Buddhist temples perched on Emei Shan in Sichuan, or explore China’s first Taoist temples atop Qingcheng Shan in Sichuan.

Treks
In Yunnan, trek through remote countryside, and encounter villages where tribal people practice ancient traditions. These are guided walks, utilizing tents. Other trekking possibilities exist as well. Please call for details.

River Trips
In Yangshuo take a bamboo raft trip on a beautiful tributary of the Li River. A cruise on the Yangzi (Yangtze) is of course a classic of the genre.

Train Travel
Take the Trans-Siberian Railroad from Beijing, making the fabled rail journey out to Mongolia, or all the way to Berlin.

Festivals
The Chinese are justifiably famous the world over for their festival pageantry. Ask us to budget in time to attend a celebration. Yunnan’s Water Splashing Festival in April or the Dragon Boat Festival in June are among our favorites.

Weather
Spring, late summer and autumn are generally the best times to visit China. There is typically little rainfall, plenty of sunshine, and temperatures ranging from 65 F in the mountains to 95 F in the cities. However, the weather in China is similar to and as varied as the weather in the United States. Thinking of a comparable U.S. city usually helps; for example Minneapolis for Beijing, Denver for Xi’an, San Francisco for Shanghai, Atlanta for Guilin. >>China Sample Itinerary
