Simple clay filters are locally produced using affordable, indigenous materials. The technology is quite simple and uses materials abundant in rural areas, including clay, rice husks and kilns. When water is filtered through the ceramic filter, 100% of all harmful bacterial is eliminated. Jobs are created at the production facility, the management of which, after initial launch, is turned over to the local workers. This program has proven to be sustainable has created a successful village cottage industry.
Water sources in Asia are abundant yet rife with disease. By providing villagers with water filters, we are helping to eliminate preventable deaths, most notably in children under five who are most susceptible to waterborne disease. The generous donations of Asia Transpacific Journeys’ travelers have helped fund the production and distribution of these filters since 2002.
